Your Operation

Most patients are admitted to the hospital on the day of surgery. Admission and fasting times will be advised by the hospital on the afternoon or evening prior to surgery. The times will vary depending on the expected time for commencement of surgery. Patients having anorectal or colonic surgery may require some form of bowel preparation. This will usually involve an enema on admission to hospital. Patients having rectal surgery may require an oral bowel preparation with Picoprep as for colonoscopy. Anal procedures will usually require an enema on admission.

You may be required to attend the preadmission clinic in the hospital where you will have your operation. This affords an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the hospital as well as enabling a pre-anaesthetic assessment. For some patients blood tests, ECG and stomal therapy consultation are required.

Patients taking anticoagulant medications like ASPIRIN, WARFARIN, PRADAXA, EFFIENT, ELIQUIS, XARELTO, CLOPIDOGREL may need to stop these prior to surgery. Instructions are provided at the time of consultation and will vary with individual circumstances. If you are in any doubt please check with the office.

Medications

You should take normal medications up to and on the day of surgery.

If you are taking anticoagulants like ASPIRIN, CLOPIDOGREL, WARFARIN, PRADAXA, ELIQUIS, XARELTO or EFFIENT you doctor will provide specific instructions about whether to stop these prior to colonoscopy.

If you are a diabetic on tablets or insulin, you should take advice from your GP or endocrinologist for the doses to take on the day of your colonoscopy.
